Projekt Lerncomputer – MAI meets Sao Joao del Rei

The project we developed for Berlin was put into a PowerPoint-presentation and presented by one of our students in the school Escola Estaduao in Sao Joao del Rei, Brazil. Pedro, a member of our team presented the learning computer and interested students wanted to know more about this project. The next week, those students came together as a team to have a lesson about basic IT-knowledge such as hardware and software; additionally we did a little teaching unit about 3D-printing. After understanding how to be capable of starting such a project, Pedro and his father gave the students the opportunity to start their own project. The following idea was to build a solar panel composed of PET-bottles, which are painted black and are being heated by the sun, making it possible to heat up water. The idea was derived from the following YouTube video:  The set up can, if you build it correctly, heat the water the bottles contain up to 60 degrees Celsius or around 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very useful in an area where there are no heating systems working with electricity. This is the first time we have shown activity outside Europe and we hope that the development in Brazil will continue and improve the situation of the country.

Visit of Katrin Staffler (MP)

Monday is for many people a boring day. Not for us!

We were visited by Mrs Staffler. She is a member of the German parliament. Mrs Staffler is part of the education, research and technology impact assessment committee and the European committee of the German parliament. There was a lot of anticipation about this meeting. The reason for the visit was our project winning “Lerncomputer”. We explained it to her and she was very fascinated.

Mrs Staffler also asked about our other projects and our connection to universities and if they offer workshops for groups like us. Another topic was how many schools have such teams like us and she was surprised that there is not a huge quantity of them. We were telling her of our small budget and our large degree of initiative to be able to accomplish our goals; furthermore we talked about how we manage school, private life and planning, building, programming and designing our projects.

To sum it all up:

We feel honored that a member of parliament shows interest in our effort, hard work and teamwork. Thank you a lot for your visit, Mrs Staffler!

The videos presenting the winners of each category were published during the award ceremony in Berlin. Did you miss this video clip? No problem, take a look:

We just noticed, that our individual video lasting 4 minutes, had been published, too:

We are so happpy and proud! Thank you!

Projekt Lerncomputer – „Eine Welt für alle“ award ceremony in Berlin

We are back from our trip to the award ceremony of the „Eine Welt für alle“ competition. We are arwarded first place in our category! The minister for economic cooperation and development lauded among other things our proactive approach, our thorough research and the sustainability of our project.

The event was scheduled for two days. We enjoyed a BBQ, a small concert, the award ceremony, a ride per ship on the river Spree and the „Eine Welt“ festival.

On an additional day we visited the german parliament.

It was a great and adventurous trip!

On Tuesday we had an incredible event. We filmed a video for our project which will be presented in Berlin soon. It was awesome to see how a professional film crew works. How they film the action that was going on, how they record the sound, just an unbelievable thing to see what ideas they had filming us in action. The filming took about 5 exhausting hours!

It`s amazing seeing how they do it. Now we all know how much work is going into making a TV-show. Thank you for this experience!

Invitation to Berlin

We were told that we had been invited to Berlin because of our success at the „Eine Welt für alle“ contest. Our principal came to visit us in order to announce that the educational computer built by us was among the best submissions and that the group responsible for its construction is going to Berlin for a three-day stay. As the cherry on the top, we received a cake – but even without it, everyone was really happy because of our invitation!
